APSU Help Marsh Mercer Consolidate Their System i Platforms

Over the years, Marsh Mercer UK had built up a significant Power i estate, with managed systems distributed across the UK and Europe as the business had grown.

However, running and maintaining this estate was becoming costly given the geographic dispersion along with different levels of OS, server firmware and HMC code to consider.  Driven by the need for cost savings and a strategy to centralise IT infrastructure, Marsh engaged IBM and APSU to help design and plan for the migration.

By implementing a single Power7 720 server in the UK to consolidate four disparate European environments, Marsh were able to take greater control of their infrastructure and recognise a strong Return on Investment (RoI) in hosting, power, maintenance and administration costs alone. Added to this are the less tangible benefits around taking advantage of the latest server technology and a more powerful server platform. In line with the additional workload coming into the UK, APSU also implemented an extension to Marsh’s current tape silo. APSU are currently in discussions with Marsh around consolidating a further five environments to form a second phase of this project.
