Royal & Sun Alliance, known as RSA, outsourced the management and development of its information technology infrastructure to technology giant IBM in 2001. As part of a continuous improvement project, upgrades to technology, particularly RSA’s System i platform, has been addressed over the years with a major migration to Power 6 systems in 2009.
The company runs most of its core applications on the IBM i platform and has now migrated to the latest i5OS software.
As part of the project to move to v7r1, confirmation was required that their iSeries System Management Software of choice, Maximise, could run within this environment and that it was a fully tested configuration.
APSU are the highest certified partner in Europe on Power i and act as a trusted advisor to a number of IBM’s top 10 Power i clients in the UK. This pedigree and close working relationship with IBM assisted greatly with the trial and testing of Maximise’s new version 10, which has been designed to run on v7r1 and beyond.
The project scope also covered a change in RSA’s disaster recovery setup, moving away from a cold-start solution to an automated high-availability option. Frequent testing to improve business resiliency meant that their requirement for temporary licences needed to be changed. Source and target systems now run concurrent versions of Maximise, providing for management of system messages, objects and libraries, and scheduling of tasks.
IBM have also chosen Maximise as a best-of-breed application for the delivery of their VSR for i service for system management on both source and target servers. VSR for i is a cloud high availability solution designed in conjunction with APSU that delivers an affordable, proven service that will keep a client business running in the event of a disaster.
“Maximise is an integral solution for our clients to ensure effective monitoring of Power i environments and automation of manual tasks,” said Chris Boyes, APSU Director of Technical Services. “It is also the software solution of choice for APSU to manage over 80 Power i systems globally from our UK operations centres.”
